Medieval clothing was worn in different varieties. Poorer people had less choice of comfortable clothing. A farmer in the Middle Ages, or even the dark times, it was usually limited to wearing rags. Wool clothing is the dominant of the day. Clothes were never washed. At the top of the economic level, royalties often wore extravagant clothes to their status and wealth.
Upper scale medieval clothes turned to the latest fashions and trends. In fact, many medieval clothing of the royal race is probably very unpleasant. As a representation of wealth, the royal medieval clothing was the latest styles and fashions. Long trains and jewelry are usually expensive clothing supplemented women of that time. Human medieval clothing was often associated with complex patterns of fabrics and colors.
If you have seen, one of the modern reproductions of medieval clothing, in films such as Braveheart, this extravagant display of wealth through clothing is an easily recognizable feature of this period.
For the poorer inhabitants of the Middle Ages, utility was more important than style and comfort. At the other end of the spectrum, people in the royalty of the time focused on the style rather than utility or comfort. Styles changed as often as is the case today, or maybe even more.
