The Basic Structures of Renaissance Clothing

The Renaissance period was an interesting one that had some really exquisitely designed clothing for men and women. The fashion in Renaissance period was inclined towards the opulent designs as well as the simplistic forms.

The Italians had a huge influence over the designs from the Renaissance period. Clothing during the Renaissance period was more about displaying one’s social status. The rich would wear clothes in expensive fabrics. Materials such as silk and brocade were used for clothing during the Renaissance period. Women’s fashion saw an evolution during this era. The initial costumes worn during the Renaissance period did restrict freedom to move around. Women wore around 5 layers of clothing. Exquisite jewels were sewn onto the patterns. Many layers of clothing thus formed an important factor of Renaissance clothing for women.

Women’s clothing also consisted of a kirtle, which was worn with a gown. This frock consists of a tightly fitted bodice and a flowing skirt. Sleeves were often wide and the rich loved to line their sleeves with fur. Gowns often had long trains of cloth behind. During the Renaissance period, it was particularly noted that Queens wore gowns made of purple color.

Fashion accessories also had a major part to play during this period. Renaissance clothing was considered to be incomplete without hoods or headgear. During the early period, women adorned pointed hats over their hair.

Renaissance clothing for men began with the rich and opulent look. This was evident during the European Renaissance. In Spain, fashion for women was a bit on the tedious side. Materials such as wires were used to create clothing. The Spanish farthingale was actually a stiffened skirt.

The Medieval Tournaments

The earliest medieval tournaments were little more than pitched battles between opposing bands of cavalry, with an emphasis on melee fighting with mace and sword as opposed to jousting with a lance.

In 1241, in Neuss, Germany, 80 Knights and Squires died in a single tournament. In an attempt to alleviate the profligate waste of fighting men killed in tournaments, the Church declared in 1180 that anyone killed at these events would be denied a christian burial.

The 12th century poet, Bertrand de Born, wrote that 'once he has started fighting, no noble knight thinks of anything but breaking heads and arms'.

In later years, tournaments became more controlled and organised, with an emphasis on jousting. Extra points might be awarded for shattering a lance on an opponents armour.

There were also events in sword and mace fighting, where the combatants fought on foot, but the joust was the event that gained a contestant the most glory. Knights could make a fortune from jousting. Squires could also 'win their spurs' and be knighted if they acquitted themselves well at a tournament.

Some scholars believe that the development of chivalry went hand-in-hand with the evolution of the tournament. Knights were expected to treat the ladies of their affections with courtly respect. Some of the finest and most decorative suits of armour ever created were worn exclusively at tournaments.

Perhaps, most importantly, the tournament bred courage and fighting skill, essential to a knight.
Tournaments became so popular that some Barons beggared themselves, staging increasingly grandiose and lavish events.

Medieval Siege Weapons

The Medieval Siege Weapons of heavier caliber (known also by the name of Petraria) seem to have taken four forms, the Arbalist, a weapon of some precision, constructed on the principle of crossbow, but larger and more powerful, for firing darts, the Mangonel, the Trebuchet, and the Espringold, for keeping up a rain of heavy missiles.

Of the Medieval Siege Weapons pertaining to the engineer rather than to the artillerist the most important and useful was the ram. Much less effective was the Mouse or Bore, a pole armed with an iron point, used to pick out the stones from the wall one at a time, using a screwing action, so as by degrees to pierce an opening rather then to breach the wall. To protect the artificers, with each of the Medieval Siege Weapons, a movable shelter or penthouse, the cat, known sometimes as a Testudo (from the Roman engine of that name), was provided. Less known among the Medieval Siege Weapons was the mine, which required more skill than the ram.

The method was more efficient in the case of castles placed on softer material such as chalk, clay, or sandstone. One of the most impressive Medieval Siege Weapons was the temporary tower. The latter was an elevated wooden structure, tall enough to overlook the walls, so that defenders might be picked off by sharp-shooters and an assault covered; the former was a lighter tower, mounted on wheels. Although we cannot classify it as one of the Medieval Siege Weapons per se, we should also mention the primitive method of the escalade, the attack by scaling-ladders, which offered a reasonable chance of success to assailants who were overwhelmingly superior in numbers and reckless of life.

Medieval Shield Symbols

By the high middle ages, shields were emblazoned with picture stories and statements about the beliefs and background of the particular knight, noble or king; shields essentially became the knight's face to the world.

The shields of the early middle ages were relatively simple affairs with painted patterns that matched the family, clan or kingdom the knight belonged to. By the high middle ages, medieval shields had incorporated Christian symbols, stylized animals and other pictures to represent the knight's life story. Christianity had a large impact on medieval European society; the heraldry and symbols of knights reflected this.

The dream Roman Emperor Constantine had of a crucifix emblazoned on the shields of his victorious army began the tradition of placing a crucifix of some kind across the shield of the knight. This symbol was also important in that it divided the shields of medieval knights so that other symbols could be placed upon the shield as well. Other symbols, particularly crowns and a flower-like symbol called the Fleur-de-lis.

While the king would carry a large, prominant crown on his shield, nobles who were vassals would carry smaller versions and the knights of those vassals would have very small, or less ornate, versions of the crown as well. As the middle ages went on, the shield became part of the ensemble of heraldry wear donned by knights. Shields were an integral part of the "coat of arms" of a knight and remained with the knight throughout his lifetime.

How to Get Quality Medieval Helmets

Today's collector's and reenactors love to buy Medieval helmets. Roman helmets are popular helmets used for Passion plays, costumes, and reenactments. Fortunately, most Roman helmets are going to be made on the larger side, often times exceeding 23 inches in diameter. This goes for the Centurion helmet as well as the common trooper helmet. In fact, most people will need an arming cap or helmet liner to make the fit more snug. Medieval helmets are going to be a little bit different. In general, these are made a little smaller than Roman helmets.

Roman battle and soldier reenactments are more popular in Europe than in the U.S. However, Passion plays and costumes parties use Roman armor and weapons a lot. There are two main types of ancient Roman helmets that people will use for plays: the Roman centurion helmet and the trooper helmet. The centurion helmet has a red plume, either facing front to back or side to side, and the trooper helmet is the common soldier's helmet that would stand guard at the foot of the cross.

The Crusader helmet, sugar loaf, and similarly constructed helmets are going to be larger in size and will fit most people. However, helmets such as the European Close Helmet and the Viking Horn helmet are going to be about a medium size, so half the people can wear them. Ask your local online retailer whether their helmets are made large enough for your head. Lastly, Greek helmets (such as the Italic Corinthian, Spartan helmet, and Trojan helmet) are going to be on the larger side also. In general, they can fit hat sizes up to 7 3/4 or more, so you may very well need an arming cap to make it more comfortable and snug.

Medieval Dresses

Dresses in medieval times reflected the social status of the individual. The Lords of manors, for example wore a light shirt made of linen as their undergarment. A heavy decorated gown called a houppelande, sometimes made of velvet was worn over it. A belt with a purse attached was worn with a belt buckle made of jewels. The gown had bagpipe sleeves, which were baggy but tight at the sleeves. A hat called a chaperon was favored by the lords, the hat used to have long tails called liripipes. Pointed shoes were preferred and during winter a heavy fur lined cloak was worn. The ladies usually wore woollen gowns that were very long with sleeves that could touch the ground.

Clothing worn by royal people was brightly colored and made of soft material. Ladies usually wore woolen gowns that were very long. A coat called a surcoat was worn over the gown. Ladies had their clothes embroidered. Fur lined cloaks were worn to keep warm- these cloaks were fastened by a decorative cord or jeweled clasp around the shoulders. Pattens, which were shoes with high bottoms, were wooden shoes used when it was muddy outside. It was fashionable in the medieval ages for women to wear jewellery.

A rough tunic to keep warm was worn by the peasant and a simple cloak over the tunic was used. As leather shoes were not affordable for the serfs, they wore cloth ones, in muddy conditions they worked barefoot and in winter they wore uncomfortable wooden shoes.
The main materials used were wool, linen, leather, fur sometimes silk and velvet. Finland was a major supplier for high quality fur pelts.

Married women in medieval times wore veils, if unmarried she let her hair loose.
Women in the medieval ages did not wear panties but men did and also wore a hose which was sewn to the undergarment.

Medieval Decor : Medieval Tapestry Designs

The Medieval period of history saw the blossoming of tapestry design into maturity. The Dark Age was characterised by simple designs of animals and birds, whereas the Middle Ages saw real art, design and beauty emerge in detail. With the emergence of more detailed tapestry design the religious themes proved very popular. Perspective developed through the Middle Ages as weavers with limited drawing skills developed artistic ability and detail.

As the Renaissance developed and the Medieval Period advanced a more scenic and secular view emerged in tapestry design. The crowding of scenes featured heavily with animals, buildings, people all crammed in. Animals were popular in medieval designs and were usually dogs, horses and other domestic species. Sometimes mythological creatures such as the unicorn would feature in tapestry design.

Madder produced red colouring, weld a yellow colour and woad is known for its blue tincture. The three primary colours were used in the Lady and Unicorn Tapestries. As craftsmen discovered the potential of mass production the colouring and material were adapted to reflect profits such as eliminating gold and silver material. As the craft developed proportion became more accurate and shadows and anatomical structure more precise in the tapestry.

Many of the classical styles and designs created in Medieval times have retained their popularity in the modern world. Scenes of country life and wine making, of battles and legends have retained their appeal. Medieval weavers created a legacy in their tapestry design which portrays daily life as well as form an imagined existence through legend. The appeal of classical figures as metaphor for the senses or as warriors continues to fire an admiration for tapestry which has retained its appeal through time.

Story of Medieval Clothing

Would you rather wear tattered rags or regalia made of silk? In the Middle Ages you had no choice. Clothing in the middle ages was rough and scratchy, but in some cases was smooth and finely sewn, (depending on how wealthy you were).

The Barbaric Period - A Pyramidal Society
Fear controlled people’s lives and induced them to ask for protection from powerful warriors who had constructed well-defended castles, or from monasteries, which did not have soldiers but did have thick walls to hide behind. Life was hard, and , people thought little of clothing. Most Europeans were dressed like today’s Benedictine monks, except for men’s trousers. Shoes were leather wrapped around the foot. Colors were plain; they were shades of gray, brown, dark blue and red. Conical hats were commonly worn. In the middle were feudal lords, clerics, and others, such as vassals.

Tailoring
In the Middle Ages, for the wealthy, most clothes were created by tailors. Some fabrics tailors used were : Burnet, perse, lincoln scarlet, kersey, russet, chalons, damask, and sandal. (Most of the population, however, made their clothing themselves).

Clothing
Often, kings and queens would wear crowns and brightly colored silks. Shoemakers and their spouses often wore borealis hats. The clothes they wore with that were woolen coats with fur-trimmed sleeves. Holy orders, such as friars, wore cloaks with hoods and habits. On their clothes was a rope belt with wooden beads for counting prayers. Felt hats with stirrups and brown jackets were the daily wear of manor lords.

History of Medieval Chainmail Armor

First, I should tell you something about the chainmail armor. It is armor made of tens of thousands metal rings. This armor offers great flexibility to the wearer.

The most people associate chainmail armor only with European medieval ages. Not everybody knows that chainmail armor was invented much sooner in antiquity and not only in Europe. It is assumed that chainmail armor was invented sometimes in half of first millennium BC in Europe and it may have been independently invented in Eastern Asia. Chainmail was probable invented by Germans or Celts. Chainmail armor was also used by Gauls in Cisalpine Gaul (Northern Italy). The Roman army adopted this type of armor.

Later, it became available to every Roman soldier. Chainmail was replaced by newer type of armor in first century AD. In thirteenth century chainmail armor covered the whole body of a warrior (even legs). However, the flexibility of chainmail armor was also its weakness. Stronger slash could kill a soldier even without breaking through chainmail hood. That's why warriors wore separate helmet over (or sometimes under) their chainmail hood. When plate armor came in fourteenth century, it replaced chainmail armor. Many warriors still used chainmail armor, even though it was often more expensive than plate armor.

The chainmail was also known in Japan. Also, there have been many differences between European chainmail armor and the Japanese one. Japanese didn't make complete chainmail sets. Chainmail was always stitched onto cloth or leather backing.

The chainmail armor was also used during the First World War. Chainmail armor still has its uses. Today it serves mostly divers as protection from sharks, butchers and animal control officers.

Medieval Armor - Knights Protective Covering During War

Armor is basically used to protect soldiers, war animals, war machines etc. at the time of war so the damages caused by the war are prevented to a great extent. Armor is been used since history and in its early stage it was made from leather, then it was the stage of mail and full plated suit of armor and then the metal armor comes. It is also said that invention of armor is also a cause of development of many vital technologies of the ancient world such as wood lamination, mining, metal refining, vehicle manufacture, decorative metal working and leather processing. With the latest development ancient armor also transformed into medieval armor, the purpose was same but the technology and the material used was different.

The medieval armor traces its origin back to 500 BC and was invented by the Celtic People in Eastern Europe. Medieval armor was developed using iron rings that was woven into a protective garment. Craftsmen of medieval ages added discs, plates, and groin caps to standard mail gear to protect vulnerable areas. Vital medieval armors that protect the critical support and protection to soldiers during war were leather coats, kneecaps, underarm protectors, skull caps etc.

Medieval armor was used basically by the soldiers to fight off their enemies on the battlefield. Exceptionally good quality weapons and armor was used by the soldiers so that it provides efficient protection to them. These armors are called as medieval armor because they belonged to medieval era and were used by the soldiers of medieval period. Armor of this gone era is highly demanded by the people of today who are adherents of these medieval armor weapons. People often explore and search for the best antique arts for their homes such as medieval armor. History of Medieval Archers

The role the Medieval Archers could play in battle was quickly understood, and as early as the years following the Norman Conquest, the practice of archery was much encouraged and the Medieval Archers were granted special privileges.

During the 13th Century, besides the mounted men-at-arms or heavy cavalry, there were light troops formed by the mounted archers and crossbow-men. The Medieval Archers were becoming every day of more importance in the field. While the longbow was preferred in England, the crossbow-man was an essential component of a Continental army during all this period. The crossbow-men were either mounted or on foot. One of the popular type of crossbow arrows was the four-sided or pyramidal head.

Among the Medieval Archers, the English archer is the most prominent character. In the 14th Century, he was equally efficient in siege and in the field. In the field, provided the archers were, by marsh, wood, or mountain, secured from a flank attack, they would bid defiance to any number of mounted men-at-arms. On the continent, the missile weapon employed to oppose the English longbow was still the arbalest (crossbow). Mounted crossbow-men were also engaged, but in much smaller numbers. The element of success was simply the more rapid “fire” of the English archers using the longbow.

Although the 15th Century saw the first hand-gunners, the Medieval Archers were still in favor. There were also important changes in organizing the Medieval Archers. Learning from the lessons of Crécy and Agincourt, Charles VII of France instituted the French-Archers, equipped partly with the longbow and partly with the crossbow.

Greek Fire - a Terrifying Early Medieval Weapon

Greek Fire, also known as Byzantine Fire, Greek Byzantine Fire, Sea Fire, was a terrible weapon of the Greek Navy and the Byzantines in the early Middle Ages.

This may be the earliest form of naval ships napalm, and their vessels with fire fighting, with some that are so much fire that it seemed as if they themselves light the water.
The Byzantines, the battles are usually too much influence, and their opponents generally ships could not escape because the Greek fire is lit, even on the water. Since the spread of fire, more and more ships would be provided by the fire.

What few surviving historical accounts we have, the Greek fire could also burning on the water and was responsible for many Byzantine military victories, which is the life of the rich for centuries.

In many early battles with the Islamic countries on Constantinople, victory was safe only because the Greek fire brigade could not resist, and was used to devastating effect.
What is really interesting is that the accounts have the fire in streams of fire from enemy ships, almost like a flame thrower. There are several accounts of the Greek fire, although many believe that it was designed by chemists in Constantinople at the beginning of sciences studied. While the Greek fire brigade, the Byzantines a terrifying weapon, it was because they are surrounded on all sides, and finally just ran out of the population. The effectiveness of Greek fire was obvious, but even if it had its own limitations.

The Weapons of Medieval Knights

A great portion of a knight's life was devoted to the mastery of a variety of weapons. Some of the factors that caused this change were improvements in metalworking and improvements in weapon design. Armor also improved over this period of time and it mandated improvements in weapons. This new type of armor caused changes in many of the knight's standard weapons. Slicing and bladed weapons were often accentuated or replaced by weapons that could pierce or apply a hammer-like blow. This articles looks at some of the more common weapons from this time period.

Before gunpowder rendered them obsolete there were basically two different types of weapons that knights used: single-handed, and polearm (two-handed). Of the single-handed weapons the sword is of course the most popular and best known. The flail was another standard weapon and it was short handled with a length of chain then a ball or flail head. Polearms were long handled weapons that knights often used in combat -particularly when mounted on horses. The lance was also a capable, and feared, weapon used for breaking up the foot ranks of enemy formations.

Other types of polearms were often variations of hand-held weapons mounted on the end of a long pole. While there were many weapons that knights used there also were a few weapons that they refused to use for various reasons. The use of weapons by knights over the course of the Middle Ages changed and evolved significantly based on many factors such as blacksmithing skills, engineering skills, improvements in armor, improvement in combat techniques, and even the code of chivalry.

History Of Medieval Armor

The first armor was introduced by the Sumerians.
The Sumerians carried spears and large rectangular shields. Greek soldiers wore bronze helmets that covered almost the whole head, and they carried large, round bronze shields.

The Greeks used armor that was made of small bronze plates joined tightly by red laces. The Greeks sometimes used a muscled bronze greave, or lower leg armor.

The Chinese armor used bronze armor.
By 1300 B.C., they were using bronze body armor made of many small plates or one large piece. The Roman armor incorporated special helmets.
Legionnaires at first wore mail, made of small metal rings, or a metal plate on the chest. The large shield and tunic were colored to match the soldier's unit. The iron helmet, tied under the chin, had cheek pieces to guard the face and a broad neck armor. Ear cutouts allowed the Roman soldier to hear.

Mail was armor made from interlinked iron rings (looked like mesh)
Because mail is not rigid, blows can break bones without actually cutting through the rings. More and more steel plates were therefore added, and by 1400, knights were covered from head to foot in plate armor. A rivet on one plate slid in a slot in another plate, or two plates pivoted on a single rivet. Battle armor, like this weighed about 1400, weighed about 44 pounds (20 kg). Plate armor was used until the 17th century.

The Age of Mail as armor and the Saxon warrior
Armor was first introduced in England during the 1066 Battle of Hastings. The wooden kite shaped shield became popular with mounted knights.

Medieval And Roman Helmets For Costumes And Reenactments

Whether the common public knows it or not, battle reenactments and stage plays with Roman soldier costumes are a pretty big niche market. This article will discuss the different types of helmets people use for reenactments and what you should look for in a quality, wearable helmet. Medieval helmets is a pretty broad term. This can encompass crusader helmets, sugar loaf helmets, northern sallet helmets, and much more.

However, the ones I mentioned are usually the most popular for reenactments and costumes. If you are going into an SCA combat event, then you'll probably need a helmet that has a foam liner with leather, plus leather chin straps to secure the helmet even more. If the helmet does not come like this, then you'll want to purchase separately the foam arming cap kit or just a plain cloth arming cap. There are two main types of ancient Roman helmets that people will use for plays: the Roman centurion helmet and the trooper helmet. The centurion helmet has a red plume, either facing front to back or side to side, and the trooper helmet is the common soldier's helmet that would stand guard at the foot of the cross.

If you are going to be wearing these, it's probably a good idea to have a helmet that has leather strings and ties to secure the cheek guard and make the helmet for snug. If a helmet does not come like this, then you may need to purchase an extra arming cap and ask if the cheek guards are adjustable.
