Whenever we think of medieval battles, we often think of knights and soldiers in battle during charging brandishing was their sword and shield. The medieval shield and sword was so famous that people begin to act like a cliché, and began to believe that other exotic weapons such as chains, maces, and two hand-axes were more involved in the fight. But the truth is a medieval shield and sword, in the offensive and defensive strength, can not be right. There are other combinations with a weapon would have more attack and defense more than a sword, but that have the same powerful combination of both.
Within the standard combination of sword shield, the sword as an offensive and defensive weapon, chopping at the enemy, while the ability to parry oncoming attacks. The medieval shield is usually for the defense, and a strong shield in combination with a smart wielder can block even the most powerful bludgeoning attack (that would be an advantage over a sword alone). The shield can also be used to attack, like the sword parries an attack by the opponent, the wielder can bash with the shield or push the opponent back. For this reason, the medieval sword and shield, while the standard and cliché, is almost unbeatable in close combat against that day.
